Happy VD Day? CDC Warns of STD Epidemic in U.S.
Be safe this Valentines Day because, according to information released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control, 20 million new s*xually transmitted diseases are diagnosed each year. Not surprisingly, most of the new infections occur in people between the ages of 15-24, costing taxpayers upwards of $16 billion dollars.
The CDC estimates that there were 20 million new s*xually transmitted infections in the US in 2008, with an estimated 90 million ongoing infections.
Among the most prevalent of STDs is human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the newest addition to the STD lineup. According to the CDC, symptoms of HPV include warts, but without treatment the disease could lead to cancer.
