Navy finds 25% of calls to sexual-assault hotlines fail

An audit has found that 25% of test calls to Navy and Marine sexual-assault hotlines either failed or were not handled properly, the Navy Times reports. The August audit nonetheless represented a “significant improvement” over two previous audits this year.

Of the 147 test calls, the Naval Audit Service reports, one-quarter produced some “negative result,” writes the Navy Times, a Gannett newspaper.

“When a call to one of the posted phone numbers is not properly handled, the sexual assault victim may not receive proper attention and guidance, and may be discouraged from reporting the incident,” the audit concluded.
